On the night of Thursday, June 22, a massive fire broke out in a high-rise near the Chernihivska metro station in Kyiv, before which locals heard a loud explosion. Preliminarily, there was a gas leak in the apartment, destroying several other dwellings - two people died and several more were injured.
According to a correspondent of OBOZREVATEL, the explosion was heard around 03:30 on the left bank of the capital. The alarm was not declared at that time, so the emergency is not connected with enemy shelling (to see photos and video, scroll to the end of the news).
The fire started in a 16-story building on Malyshka Street. According to preliminary information from rescuers, a gas explosion destroyed four and damaged six apartments there. At first it was reported that 18 people were saved, while later it became known about the dead. To eliminate the consequences 70 people and 13 units of equipment were involved, as well as psychologists of the State Emergency Service, medics, law enforcers and other services worked on the site.
The Real Kyiv channel, citing local residents, reported that a gas cylinder most likely exploded.
Ambulances and rescuers went to the scene. The footage posted online shows several floors of the house destroyed and several apartments demolished by the explosion.
The head of Kyiv City Military Administration, Sergiy Popko, said that the probable cause of a powerful explosion in a multistory apartment building on two floors was a gas leak.
The fire was on an area of 150 square meters. The fire was extinguished by specialists of the State Emergencies Service. Also at the site rescuers continued to search for people.
The State Emergency Service clarified that the explosion in a 16-storey apartment building on Malyshko Street in Dniprovsky district, preliminary gas occurred on the seventh floor with the subsequent destruction of structures.
At 05:45 the fire at the site of the explosion was localized. Seventy rescuers and 13 units of equipment were involved in the elimination of the consequences. Also, three psychologists of the State Emergencies Service continued to work at the site. Assistance was provided to five residents.
" Six gas rescue squads are working at the scene of the explosion. At this time, two people were injured, 18 were rescued. Rescue efforts continue," Kyiv City Military Administration commented after 06:00 Thursday.
At 7:30 a.m., Kyiv Mayor Vitaly Klitschko reported the first victim of an explosion in a 16-story building in the Desnyansky District.
"Rescuers found the body of one casualty. Search and rescue work continues. Causes of the explosion are being found out by specialists", - he added.
For his part, Kyiv City Military Administration Speaker Mikhailo Shamanov noted:"The explosion was of such force that it was hardly a gas cylinder". According to him, the house is preliminarily gasified. All people have been evacuated from it.
"What will happen to the house next, will be decided by experts after appropriate expertise," he explained.
As of 07:00, specialists of the State Emergency Service and the police were establishing whether there could still be people in the destroyed house in Kyiv.
"The fire has already been localized, the elimination continues. By now four apartments have been destroyed, 18 people were rescued, one was killed," said State Emergency Situations Ministry press officer Olexandr Khorunzhy.
Closer to 08:00 Klitschko already reported two deaths as a result of an explosion in an apartment building. In addition, two of the victims were hospitalized, and two more were treated on the spot by medics.
"Eighteen tenants were rescued from the damaged apartments. In general, people were evacuated from all rooms of the house. Search and rescue work continues. Causes of the explosion are being clarified by specialists. The city has already identified two boarding schools in the Dniprovsky district for temporary accommodation of people from the damaged house," he added.
The State Emergency Service of Ukraine confirmed that two people died as a result of the explosion in the apartment building, four more were injured (of which three were hospitalized) and 18 were rescued. Two citizens sought medical help.
At 08:10 the fire was extinguished. All relevant services continued to work at the scene.
Firefighters also rescued a pet.
"Every life counts!" - stressed in the State Emergency Service.
As reported by OBOZREVATEL, there was a fire in a five-story apartment building in the Solomensky district of Kyiv. While extinguishing the fire, the State Emergency Situations Service rescued a woman who had suffered burns to the head and limbs.
