On the evening of Sunday, April 23, a very unusual phenomenon was seen in the sky over Ukraine - the Northern Lights. It was observed by residents of the Kyiv, Chernihiv, Sumy and Kharkiv regions.

Photos of the rare phenomenon were posted online by eyewitnesses. It resembles the northern lights, but not the usual green, but pink (to see the photo, scroll to the bottom of the page).

According to astronomers, this phenomenon was caused by powerful solar flares.

The Northern Lights (also known as the Aurora Borealis) is a rapidly changing optical phenomenon of glowing parts of the night sky in polar regions. It occurs in the upper layers of the planet's atmosphere under the influence of streams of charged particles directed by the planet's magnetic field towards the poles.

Usually, on Earth, such lights are observed at a distance of 20-35° from the Earth's magnetic poles simultaneously at all longitudes, but with different intensities. Kyiv is located at latitude 50°, so such phenomena are extremely rare in this region of the planet.

Earlier, OBOZREVATEL reported that on the evening of April 23, 2023, an unusual phenomenon was observed in the sky over Ukraine - a meeting of the Moon and Venus. This is an astronomical phenomenon when both cosmic bodies are in the sky side by side.
