Neurologist explains whether wearing high heels frequently is harmful

High-heeled shoes are certainly beautiful, and they also help women look visually slimmer. However, doctors keep telling us that we shouldn't overdo it when it comes to wearing heels. They cause many health problems.

Ukrainian neurologist Andrii Timchenko also warns women about the danger. In an exclusive commentary for OBOZREVATEL, he explained how frequent wearing of high heels can be harmful and also gave tips to help recover from a day in stilettos.

Thus, according to the doctor, heels shift the center of gravity of the body forward, while the hip and spine go out of a straight line. The higher the heels, the more muscles contract. As the height increases, the pressure on the toes increases too, causing them to deform.

"Wearing heels for a long time increases the pressure on the pads of the foot, which can cause deformation, compression of the nerves in the foot, and pain. Deformation of the foot itself, overgrowth in the area of the big toe and its closure can also occur," the doctor added.

Changing the position of the foot, the doctor emphasizes, affects the posture in general. In addition, there is a risk of changes in the position of the pelvic organs and their blood circulation.

The natural curves of the spine in the lower back and neck can also be deformed. Changes in the position of the temporomandibular joint can become noticeable, leading to a malocclusion.

"Change your shoes more often. They should be comfortable! Do simple preventive exercises for your feet. Walk barefoot on grass, pebbles, and sand as much as possible. Use massage mats and rollers. Even pouring cereal (ordinary barley so that the foot does not hurt) into your socks and walking at home will be useful. You will also get foot peeling as a bonus," the doctor recommends.
