Humanity is heading for disaster: 200 researchers issue an alarming warning

Humanity is heading for disaster

You have probably already heard about the problem of climate change, but unfortunately, not everyone understands how dangerous it is and does not treat warming as a real threat. Hundreds of scientists are constantly warning about the devastating consequences that await everyone and calling for immediate action.

An international group of more than 200 scientists has published the Global Tipping Points Report 2023, which details the impact of climate change on the planet. If humanity does not take significant action, the catastrophe will not be avoided.

The fact that people emit heat-trapping gases into the atmosphere has caused an unprecedented increase in the average temperature on the planet. This has already led to extreme glacial melt, rising sea levels, reduced biodiversity, and an increase in the number of fires, floods, storms, etc.

The report focuses on the tipping points that could lead to even greater destruction. These include, for example, the overturning and destruction of ice sheets and coral reefs.

Some ecosystems that are on the verge of significant changes, such as part of the Greenland ice sheet, the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, and the Amazon rainforest, have already approached tipping points.

Scientists believe that they can be called the initiators of cause-and-effect chains that will spread across the globe, provoking disruptions in other systems.

"Our research shows that in the past, even small natural changes in greenhouse gas concentrations have had a domino effect, changing different parts of our planet, from sea levels to entire ecosystems," says scientist Caroline Lear of Cardiff University in the UK, "We expect to see a similar domino effect from the much faster changes in greenhouse gas concentrations caused by fossil fuel combustion."

Humanity is facing a loss of ability to grow crops, as the effects of climate change could destroy up to half of the world's wheat and corn growing area. This poses a serious threat to stability and the process of destruction has already begun. In 2022 alone, more than 27 million children went hungry for this very reason.

The researchers call for a coordinated global political effort to prevent a catastrophe.

  1. Renewable energy sources must spread their influence. Fossil fuel emissions must be phased out globally by 2050;
  2. Climate change-related impacts will increase global inequality and disrupt the stability of the global economy. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen adaptation and loss management in the UNFCCC;
  3. Tipping points should be included in the world climate "inventory" of Global Analysis and Nationally Determined Contributions, which measures each country's efforts to combat climate change;
  4. State coalitions, non-state actors and civil society should coordinate efforts to avert negative tipping points and trigger positive ones;
  5. An urgent global summit on tipping points should be convened;
  6. Science should be funded and the interaction between science and policy should be improved to deepen knowledge and translate it into action as quickly as possible.
