Baking soda and hydrogen peroxide will whiten and disinfect the seams

Untidy grout joints can spoil the impression of any bathroom interior. Meanwhile, stains and dirt on grout are not as easy to remove as we would like due to its porous structure. However, cleaning experts suggest there is a way to tackle cleaning grout joints without excessive effort.

Express consulted several experts for advice on this issue, and they recommended a well-proven product.

Why do grout stains appear

The main causes of grout stains are fungus and mold, which give the grout an unpleasant color and pose a danger by spreading spores into the air, leading to potential respiratory and skin problems.

Soap-suds can also accumulate in the seams, creating an unpleasant yellowish coating. Fortunately, you can address both issues without having to buy special products that may be too aggressive and could potentially damage ceramic tiles.

Bleaching compound for tile grouting

To prepare a mixture that will not only clean but also whiten the joints, you will need a few simple ingredients that can be purchased at any store. For this, take:

  • Baking soda - 1 cup
  • Hydrogen peroxide - one-third of a cup
  • Dishwashing liquid - 1 tablespoon

Baking soda, the base of the cleaning mixture, acts as a natural deodorant, bleach, and a mild disinfectant. It also serves as a gentle abrasive that won't damage the tiles, even with vigorous rubbing.

Hydrogen peroxide is an effective, environmentally friendly, and safe bleach with a potent disinfectant effect. It dissolves dirt and removes stains similar to chlorine products but with less toxicity. It also won't harm colored grouts, though it should not be used on polished marble.

To prepare the cleaning agent, mix all the ingredients until they form a homogeneous mass. Using a soft brush, apply the mixture to the seams and leave it for 20 minutes to allow it to work deeply. After that, if necessary, scrub the stained areas again with a brush and rinse off the residue.

The tile joints should be thoroughly cleaned and brightened, and the fungi and bacteria that were present should be eliminated with this treatment.
