How to grow a peach from seed

It is not easy to grow peaches on a personal plot. It takes a lot of effort to get a harvest of sweet and juicy fruits, but the main threat lies in low temperatures. It is difficult for trees to survive the winter.

Standard care procedures include fertilizing, loosening the soil, and treating for diseases and pests. Experienced gardeners emphasize that the actual planting process also plays an important role. Read how to grow a peach from a seed in the OBOZ.UA article.

Step 1

It is important to choose a ripe and fresh peach, the seed of which will become the basis of a new tree. You should also make sure in advance that the selected variety is suitable for the climate zone.

Step 2

Cut open the peach, carefully remove the seed and peel it from the pulp. Dry the seed thoroughly in the fresh air for 1-2 days. Good drying will prevent mold and rotting in the following steps.

Step 3

After drying, carefully open the seed, for example, using pliers. Important note: be very careful not to damage the seeds inside. It is the almond-shaped seed from the cracked seed that will grow into a peach tree.

Step 4

The next step is to stratify or cool the seeds. For this, you will need wet peat and a container. Put the seeds in a plastic bag or container with wet peat or a paper towel. Seal the bag and put it in the refrigerator for about 8-10 weeks. A kind of imitation of winter conditions will help prepare for germination.

Step 5

You should take a responsible approach to choosing a planting pot. Fill the container with good quality soil and make a hole about 2.5 cm deep in the center. After placing the cooled seeds in the hole, cover them with soil. Water the soil a little.

Step 6

Place the pot in a warm and sunny place. The substrate should be watered regularly, but waterlogging will cause the planting material to rot. The seeds should germinate in a few weeks.

Step 7

Now let's move on to germination and transplanting. After the first shoots reach a few cm in height, you can transplant the peach either into a larger container or into an open area in the garden. Choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil.

Step 8

Peaches need regular watering, especially during dry periods. A young tree can be pruned as needed to form its crown.
