How often you should bathe your dog: what to watch out for

The frequency of bathing a dog depends on many factors: from hair length and breed specifics to his household habits and weather conditions outside. Experts say you should bathe your dog at least once a month.
Basset gunders, Newfoundlanders and Alaskan Malamutes should be bathed more often, ideally once a week. Your Dog Advisor tells us more about this.
Breed peculiarities and bathing
Smooth-haired breeds do not require frequent baths, particularly Boston terriers, Weimaraners and hounds.
Some dogs have what is called a "water repellent" coat. Golden Retrievers, Irish Spaniels and Otterhounds all have special undercoat grease that helps protect the skin from dirt and helps it dry quickly when wet.
Australian Sheepdogs, Pyrenean Mountain Dogs and Alaskan Huskies have a "double" undercoat. These breeds are advised to be brushed more often to rid their coats of dirt and debris, and to bathe them only when necessary.
In any case, washing too often will harm the protective coating on the skin. Excessive water treatments can lead to dry skin, redness, rashes and dandruff.
Top tips
- Brush the coat before bathing, especially if it is prone to tangles. A tangled coat also traps water, which can cause skin irritation.
- Choose the right shampoo. It's best to seek advice from your vet. Don't wash your dog with regular shampoo that isn't designed for pets.
- Excessive amounts of shampoo will make it difficult to remove lather from the coat. If you don't shampoo completely, your dog's skin may become dry and irritated.
- Don't wash your dog with hot water - it's not safe. Adjust to a cool temperature.
- Dry your pet's ears immediately after washing. Avoid getting water, especially soapy foam, in them.
- Prepare towels in advance: lay one on the floor and wipe the coat with the other.
- When using a hair dryer, use the cool setting to avoid burns on sensitive skin.
