Communicate offline: top messengers that work without the Internet and mobile network

It is not difficult to stay online without the Internet and mobile network

OBOZREVATEL tells about the best offline messengers that will help you stay online without the Internet and mobile network, and explains how such applications work.

What is offline messaging and how does it work?

Offline messaging is communication via standalone messengers that do not require a mobile network or Internet connection. Such messengers use Bluetooth, Wi-Fi Direct, and P2P communication.

Bluetooth

Just like transferring files via Bluetooth, two devices can also send messages. With this connection, the maximum distance between devices can be about 100 metres.

Wi-Fi Direct

Unlike a regular Wi-Fi signal, which requires a router to access, Wi-Fi Direct is a limited connection that is formed exclusively between two phones. This connection can work at a distance of up to 60 metres.

P2P messaging

This type of connection allows you to build an entire network of smartphones that can be used to send messages from one user to another. This mode is available in some messaging applications.

Note that a message sent from notional user 1 to user 10 uses phones 2-9 that are in the network, but only the sender and recipient can see the message text. Other users' smartphones act as signal amplifiers or extenders.

Best apps for offline messaging

Bridgefy (Android, iOS)

Bridgefy is the only offline messenger that works for both iOS and Android. It allows you to send encrypted messages, videos, and images via Wi-Fi Direct or Bluetooth. The app also supports P2P mode. Bridgefy is free, but it does contain adverts.

It was the main messaging app used by protesters in Hong Kong to avoid internet censorship imposed by China.

Briar (Android)

Briar is another free offline messaging service that can also be used to send images and videos. The application is available only for Android users.

You can chat both one-on-one and in group chats. There are blogs and forums to join. Briar uses end-to-end encryption, so data is stored only on the local device. The app also does not allow screenshots to be taken to protect users from private conversations.

Signal Offline Messenger (Android)

This app is not related to the Signal messenger, so don't confuse them. It works using the WiFi Direct network and allows you to communicate from up to 100 metres away. Private and group chats are available, and you can send text, audio, photo, and even video messages. Signal Offline Messenger is available for Android users only.

Bluetooth Chat (Android)

The Bluetooth Chat app uses Bluetooth only to send messages from one device to another and can work up to 100 metres away. It also uses end-to-end encryption, which makes your communication secure. The downside of the app is that it is only available for Android users, and there are no options for video or voice calls.

Another problem is that the app doesn't have an address book as such, so after disconnecting, you'll need to send a request to the user you've already communicated with again.
