Aroma will last all year round: which indoor flowers will provide a pleasant smell in the house
We usually decorate our homes with plants because of the decorative properties of their leaves. But some of them can also fill your home with fragrance. This happens during the flowering period of such plants. If you want to decorate your home not only visually, you need to know which flowers will provide a pleasant aroma.
To answer this question, the British newspaper Express turned to gardening expert Maddison Moulton. She compiled her top list of fragrant plants for the home. Moreover, based not only on how they smell, but also on their decorative characteristics.
Orchid
Orchids spread different scents around them when they bloom. Depending on the species, they may have notes of spices such as cinnamon, vanilla or chocolate, or they may resemble the scent of other flowers such as roses and lilies. In addition, Orchids have a long flowering period and can fill a home with fragrance for several months. Moulton advised opting for varieties such as the knotted brassavola, which smells like lily of the valley, oncidium with chocolate notes in its scent, or Walker's cattleya, which emits a scent with notes of vanilla mixed with cinnamon. But before you get yourself this capricious plant, be sure to read the full guide to caring for it for a beginner.
Hyacinth
According to the expert, these spring flowers are easy to grow on a windowsill and every year they delight not only with their lush blooms but also with their intoxicating aroma. You can choose a flower of your favourite shade - not only the purple-blue that is typical for Hyacinths, there are also varieties that are white, cream, pink, apricot, yellow and red.
Lavender
This herb is not usually considered a houseplant, but it can be successfully grown in a pot on the windowsill. The plant only needs watering when its soil is completely dry. When adding water, make sure that you pour the pot deeply until the water goes through and out of the drainage holes at the bottom. Don't forget to pour out any excess water that flows into the sump. That's all the main wisdom. Lavender loves bright sunlight in summer and spring and responds to it with flowering and a pleasant smell.
Gardenia
Of all the species of this flowering plant, the jasmine Gardenia feels best at home. It is somewhat capricious, but it does not require anything extraordinary. For the plant to bloom and give off its scent, it needs the right temperature - from 18 to 21 degrees during the day and from 15 to 18 degrees at night. Every 2-3 weeks, Gardenia should be fertilised with fertiliser, and during flowering, wilted flowers should be cut off immediately - this will stimulate it to produce new buds.
Hoya
Do you like plants that can be grown in a hanging planter for beautiful cascades of green shoots? Hoya is your choice. Its white, pink and red wax-like flowers spread a delicate scent around them that will not be too intense even in a small room. Hoya needs a lot of sunlight. Also, it is better not to move it - it does not tolerate changes in position. Watering should be moderate, as well as feeding. An excess of fertiliser can even cause the Hoya to miss the flowering season.
