Which day is better to choose for baking Easter cakes and dyeing eggs for Easter

This year, Ukrainians will celebrate Easter on May 5. On one of the most important Christian holidays, it is customary to bake Easter cakes and color eggs. It is customary to choose certain days for these activities.

When to bake Easter cake

According to church canons, Easter cake should be baked during Holy Week. Maundy Thursday or Holy Saturday are the best days for this.

However, in Slobozhanshchyna and some other regions of the country, it is customary to bake Easter cakes on Good Friday, but only before the Epitaphios is brought out, that is, in the morning.

Nevertheless, most often Easter cakes are baked on Maundy Thursday, after washing away all sins and cleaning the house.

When to dye eggs

According to church tradition, eggs should be dyed on the same day as Easter cake, i.e. on Maundy Thursday. And then, on Holy Saturday, Easter cakes, along with the dyed eggs, will be taken to church for consecration.

Traditionally, eggs are dyed in onion peel or natural dyes are used. The most popular color is red-brown.
