Kulish is a legendary Ukrainian dish made from millet in meat broth or just water and served with bacon, onions and garlic.

History of Cossack kulish

The history of kulish began 500 years ago, when the Ukrainian Cossacks were formed. Only unmarried men were admitted to the brotherhood - this was the most important condition. All of them had to be able to cook, or at least learn how to cook, under different conditions and from whatever the Lord God sent. One of the most popular dishes was kulish, which is similar to a thick soup or liquid porridge. It was so nourishing that it could replace an entire meal. That's why it became a staple on the Cossack menu.

Food blogger Irina Burdyug shared her recipe for the famous kulish with onions and bacon on her Instagram page, which you can prepare in just 30 minutes.
