Halyna Hutchins' mother refused to come to the premiere of the movie "Rust" because of Alec Baldwin: what is known

Halyna Hutchins' mother refused to come to the premiere of the film Rust

The mother of Hollywood cameraman Halyna Hutchins, who died on the set of the movie Rust, refused to attend the premiere of the scandalous film because of the actor responsible for her daughter's death, Alec Baldwin. Although the celebrity was acquitted in court, the woman cannot forgive him, claiming that he has not yet apologized to her for the fatal incident.

The premiere of Rust took place at the Camerimage festival in Poland three years after a prop gun fired by Baldwin fatally wounded Hutchins on the set of the western. According to The Guardian, despite the tragic background, the movie sold out quickly.

Hutchins's mother, Olga Solovey, and her lawyer, Gloria Allred, issued statements the day before saying that she would not be attending the film's premiere. According to the festival, the screening is only intended to honor the memory of Hutchins, who attended Camerimage and wanted her work to be shown at this screening.

"Even though Mr. Baldwin fired the gun that killed Halyna, he never called them to apologize. Even worse, he claimed through his lawyers that Halyna was emotionally distant from her family in Ukraine. This is untrue, hurtful and insulting. Furthermore, the decision not to even call the family to say he was sorry is cruel and dishonors Halyna and her memory. Now, a decision has been made to promote Irzha to buyers in order to make a profit for Alec Baldwin and others involved in Halyna's death," the lawyer said.

The cameraman's mother also expressed her pain. She said that she had dreamed of meeting her daughter at the premiere of Rust in Poland, but Baldwin took this opportunity away from her.

"I had always hoped to meet my daughter in Poland to see her work come to life on the screen. Unfortunately, this hope was taken away from me when Alec Baldwin fired a gun and killed my daughter. Alec Baldwin continues to compound my pain with his refusal to apologize to me and his refusal to take responsibility for her death. Instead, he is trying to unfairly benefit from my daughter's murder. That is why I refuse to participate in the festival to promote the film Rust, especially now that justice for my daughter has not yet been achieved," she said.

Camerimage festival director Kazimierz Suwala told the Hollywood Reporter that he had not planned to invite Alec Baldwin to the premiere, as the event was supposed to be dedicated not to him, but to the dead cameraman.

What is known about the case

Cameraman Halyna Hutchins was shot dead on the set of the film Rust on October 21, 2021. The Ukrainian woman died after suffering a perforating chest wound. The bullet also hit director Joel Seuss, who was standing behind her. The man was injured but survived.

In April 2023, Alec Baldwin was acquitted of manslaughter charges against Halyna Hutchins. Then the filming of the movie continued. Later, the prosecutor's office found evidence again. After an examination of the revolver used by the actor, the investigation resumed on the grounds of negligent use of firearms and disrespect for the safety of others. Baldwin faced up to 18 months in prison.

On March 6, 2024, a New Mexico jury found gunman Hannah Gutierrez Reed guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the death of a Ukrainian cameraman. On July 12, all charges were dropped against Alec Baldwin, and his lawyers filed a motion to dismiss the case.

The family of Halyna Hutchins cannot accept the court's decision and says they will "fight to the end." The relatives and the widower of the cameraman will try to bring the actor to justice again.
