Ukrainian is among them: 5 women who became models after 50. Photo
Models such as Cindy Crawford, Claudia Schiffer, and Naomi Campbell made their name in their youth. Now they are over 50 years old, and these beauties continue to be active players in the modeling business: they walk the runways, appear on magazine covers, and participate in campaigns.
Fortunately, this scenario is not the only one possible for everyone who wants to become a part of the fashion industry. You can also start a modeling career in adulthood. The women in the OBOZ.UA selection will convince you of this.
1. Larysa Mykhaltsova (71 years old)
Larysa Mykhaltsova, a Ukrainian originally from the village of Kalynivka in the Mykolaiv region, was included in the list of the BBC's 100 Most Influential and Inspiring Women in 2018. She worked as a music teacher for 40 years, but one day her life changed forever. The owner of a glossy magazine noticed her, 63 years old and holding an accordion, in a restaurant. He was interested in Larysa's appearance. Soon after, she received a phone call and was offered a photo shoot with her accordion for Cool'baba magazine. Without hesitation, she agreed. And she was right! Later, she had catwalk shows, professional shootings, and even participation in a fashion show in Frankfurt.
2. Nicola Griffin (63 years old)
One day, 53-year-old businesswoman Nicola Griffin was withdrawing cash in Nottingham (UK). A representative of a modeling agency approached her and offered to appear in a commercial for gray hair shampoo. She took his contacts just in case. When she got home, she told her daughters everything. They persuaded their mother to try it, and a few months later she starred in the Caribbean. Her modeling activities never stopped there: she started working with famous brands.
Speaking to The Independent, Griffin said that her photos inspire other women of her age, "I received a lot of emails and a lot of feedback on social media that it was time to showcase us: women of all sizes and all shapes. They were pleased to see someone their own age: an ordinary woman who hadn't been on a diet or had any surgeries. An everyday mom... It's nice to see someone as nature intended."
3. Cindy Joseph (1951-2018)
After 49-year-old makeup artist Cindy Joseph stopped dyeing her long gray hair, she was spotted on a New York street by a casting agent and asked to pose for Dolce & Gabbana. "Back then, I definitely didn't fit the status quo of the modeling world. I was 49 years old. I was less than 172 centimeters, and my hair was gray... I had crow's feet," Cindy said in an interview with Yahoo Beauty.
Despite her doubts, the woman signed a contract with the Ford modeling agency. In her 50s and 60s, she worked as a model for such companies as Olay, Elizabeth Arden, Christian Dior, Anthropologie, Ann Taylor, and more. Then Cindy founded and actively developed the natural cosmetics brand Boom! by Cindy Joseph. At the age of 67, her life was cut short. The cause was soft tissue sarcoma.
4. Yasmina Rossi (67 years old)
Yasmina Rossi's first attempts to break into the fashion world were at the age of 30. However, at that time, these were little-known magazines. Real fame came to her when she was 57: the beautiful woman with gray hair was invited to work as a model at the Ford agency in New York, and she accepted the offer. Her dream came true! Now, famous French and German brands often invite Rossi for their advertising campaigns. These are Marks & Spencer, YSL, Hermes, Jil Sander and many others. In addition, the woman tried her hand at acting, starring in the films Timeless Beauty and Revelator.
5. Jacky O'Shaughnessy (71)
Jacky O'Shaughnessy, 60, had no idea that the whole world would soon know about her. One day, representatives of the American Apparel fashion brand noticed her in a restaurant. They were so impressed with her that they offered her to become the face of their new campaign. She immediately said yes. A few days later, she took part in a semi-nude photo shoot, and a telling inscription appeared under her photos, "Sexuality has no expiration date." This bold step was the beginning of Jacky's modeling career.
