Ukrainian actor eloquently addresses Russians in George Clooney's The Agency with an impromptu line: the director liked it so much that he left it in the series. Video

George Clooney did not cut out the appeal of the Ukrainian actor to the Russians in The Agency

Ukrainian actor Oleksandr Rudynskyi spontaneously addressed the Russians in one of the episodes in George Clooney's The Agency, where he played a military officer Sasha Butenko, who performs an undercover mission as a doctor. Despite his fears, the director really liked the line.

The actor admitted that this was the biggest foreign project he had ever worked on. Oleksandr appeared in four episodes, and he shared details about a memorable incident on the set in an interview on the YouTube channel Rozmova.

According to Rudynskyi, five directors worked on the spy thriller (which also stars Michael Fassbender), including Joe Wright (Pride and Prejudice), Philip Martin (The Crown) and Neil Berger (The Illusionist and Divergent).

"Joe Wright listened to all the ideas I offered. I even improvised a scene that wasn't in the script. I made a gesture - Ukraine forever free," said the actor. "There is a shot where I break a glass and shout, 'Glory to Ukraine! Ba***rds" when we pass a Russian checkpoint. The pyrotechnics were supposed to charge the rear window with explosives, and it exploded, but not completely. In this take, I started breaking the glass with an assault rifle, and it added some tension, refreshed the scene."

After the take was over, the actor got out of the car, worrying a lot about whether the director would reshoot it. However, Wright assured him that he was delighted with the line.

"He said, 'No, no, great job, we're keeping it.' And he used that take during the editing stage. I was worried whether they would drop out phrases like 'Glory to Ukraine!' even though in was included in the script for episode 10. Everything is so well written there. Once I read these lines I said, 'Wow! This is a dream scene'."

The series premiered on Paramount+ with Showtime on November 29. Viewers immediately noticed the above mentioned line, stating:

  • "This is music to my ears, thanks for the recommendation for a Friday movie night."
  • "One of the producers of the series is George Clooney. He and his wife are doing a lot to fight Russian propaganda."
  • "The series should get Grammy for that scene."
