"This is neither an action movie nor a comedy": critics have torn apart the movie with Cameron Diaz, which they have been waiting for 10 years
The grand return of actress Cameron Diaz to the screens was marked by a failure. Critics reacted sharply to the Netflix action comedy Back in Action, in which the star starred alongside Jamie Foxx.
Seth Gordon's film about former CIA agents has garnered a lot of reviews since its premiere on January 17. But while fans warmly welcomed the comedy, which they had been waiting for for 10 years, film critics did not like the movie, Metro reports.
On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie "Back in Action" received a terrible rating, scoring only 24%. On the other hand, fans gave the comedy a 62% rating on Popcornmeter.
According to The Guardian review, Diaz proved to the world that in recent years she hasn't lost the special magic she shares with the audience on the screen. Her performance was highly praised. However, the actress was advised to be selective about where she films.
In turn, the IndieWire review says that the script of the comedy action movie was tasteless and predictable.
"The tasteless script falters and the sets are unimpressive," the article says, "making the movie fail as either an action movie or a comedy.
The Associated Press review said that Diaz retained her charm and showed real chemistry with co-star Jamie Foxx. However, the critics explained that this does not mean that the film's main characters' lines were funny or logical. And the Observer review said that it was hard to tell whether it was an action movie, a comedy or a family movie.
"It was for movies like Back in Action that the word 'mediocre' was coined. It's not that this movie is bad," says The Wrap review, "It's not interesting enough to be bad. It just is."
