"The pressure is always there." Olena Zelenska admits how full-scale war affected her children
The First Lady of Ukraine, Olena Zelenska, has admitted that she is extremely upset by the life of her children because of the realities of Russia's war against Ukraine. Armed aggression and the almost complete lack of communication with their father have greatly affected their worldview.
As the wife of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told Yleisradio in an interview, her daughter Oleksandra, 19, has no plans for the future, and her son Kyrylo, 11, is interested in the military.
"My daughter's daily activities are related to her studies, but she has no plans for the future. It's sad for me as a mother," Zelenska said and added about her son: "He knows all the types of missiles that Russia is launching at us. He can also calculate their speed. I would like my son to be interested in music, art, sports, and not dream of serving in the army or aviation."
The first lady spends more time with her children than the busy Volodymyr Zelensky and is at home more often. Although the family tries to lead a more or less peaceful life, air raids are a constant reminder of the terrible present.
"When I help my son with his homework or take care of our pets. But when the air raid siren goes off, we come back to reality. In the morning, I get the kids ready for school and we continue to live, but the pressure of war is always there. Life is not normal," Zelenska said.
Still, sometimes the family can get together for a few hours. As the first lady said earlier, the children see their father "about once a week" or even less.
Currently, daughter Oleksandra is studying at the university to become a lawyer, just like her father did in his younger years, and son Kyrylo is at school.
