Real chain mail and metal armor. How alyona alyona and Jerry Heil's costumes for Eurovision 2024 were created

Ukraine's representatives at the Eurovision Song Contest 2024, singer Jerry Heil and rapper alyona alyona, impressed the audience of the first semi-final of the contest, securing a place in the grand final to be held on May 11 at the Malmö Arena in Sweden. The performers received a standing ovation from the audience with their powerful performance.

One of the important components of the performance was the costumes of the performers - the images included real armor, chain mail and a burnt dress. The authors were inspired by the archangel Michael, Jerry Heil told Suspilne.

The star noted that the Eurovision outfits are not imitations, but real details that have considerable weight. The figure of the Archangel Michael was chosen as a reference. The singer adds that some Euro fans compare her to Joan of Arc, while others see her as Prometheus, who brings fire to people. The main goal was to recreate the image of those "who carry this world on their steel shoulders."

"My chain mail actually weighs three kilograms. It took 10 thousand rings to make it," says alyona alyona. The rapper admitted that she has already "merged" with her costume, despite the heavy details of the garment. The singer adds that she is wearing a torn and burnt dress by Jerry Heil. The multi-layered image of alyona alyona symbolizes the thorny life of the woman.

Margarita Shekel, the contestants' stylist, said that while working on the number with director Tanya Muinho, the team analyzed the lyrics of the song "Teresa & Maria," which "dictated the images." "I'll start with the Jerry Heil look. I immediately saw the Diva's dress as well: it had to be transparent, matte, to emphasize the porcelain skin of Jerry Heil," says the expert.

The idea for the metal shoulder came about because of Shekel's penchant for contrasts: "I wanted to set off the delicacy of the dress with a metallic detail." This element of the image symbolizes the line from the song "no matter what, the world is on her shoulders".

"I worked with the archives and analyzed the clothes in the images from the icons. And in the images of the archangel Michael, the protector of Kyiv, I saw the frequent use of armor on the shoulder," the stylist recalls. "As for the alyona alyona costume, we remembered that the performers are not one group, but temporarily work in a duet. Part of the song is rap, which for me is a feminist manifesto. So we had to reflect this mood in the costume. We made several options and settled on a kimono with a reinforced armor-shaped shoulder."

The chain mail dress became a metaphor for protection and confrontation in the struggle. The costume was made by Kyiv-based craftswoman Helen Romanova and Luvi designers. The outfit went from a sketch, to working out the cut, to tests with windblowers on stage.

The metal elements on the shoulder were made by Odesa-based craftsman Andriy Chornohor. "The blacksmith had to work in extremely difficult conditions during the shelling of the city, sometimes without electricity, with very short deadlines and remote fittings. It wasn't easy - we had to make changes many times to make the armor comfortable for Jerry Heil," says Margarita Shekel.
