Prince Harry and Meghan Markle changed their children's surname: they used to be Mountbatten-Windsor
Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle have changed the surname of their children, 4-year-old Archie and 2-year-old Lilibeth. Before King Charles III ascended to the throne, the Duke and Duchess's children were "Archie Mountbatten-Windsor" and "Lilibeth Mountbatten-Windsor."
However, the couple recently decided to make a change, first renaming their website to "Sussex" and then changing their children's surname to match their royal title. This was reported by People magazine.
Harry and Meghan's children were given the titles of Prince and Princess when their grandfather, King Charles, became monarch in September 2022. The famous couple used their children's royal titles for the first time in March 2023 when they announced Lilibeth's christening, and on the royal family's official website, their names were changed to "Prince Archie of Sussex" and "Princess Lilibeth of Sussex."
According to People, Sussex is a family name. Using the titles as their children's surnames is in line with the tradition used by members of the royal family. The three children of Prince William and Kate Middleton are officially named Prince George of Wales, Princess Charlotte of Wales, and Prince Louis of Wales, following their parents' titles. However, they use a less formal version at school: George of Wales, Charlotte of Wales, and Louis of Wales.
Prince William and Prince Harry also went this route when it came to their surnames while serving in the armed forces, becoming "William of Wales" and "Harry of Wales".
Formally, the royal family has the surname Mountbatten-Windsor. Talk of Meghan and Prince Harry's royal titles has resumed amid the launch of their new website, Sussex.com.
After the couple stepped away from the royal family in 2020, Buckingham Palace announced that they would no longer use the titles of His/Her Royal Highness. However, Harry and Meghan are still officially referred to as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
In addition, Prince Harry has retained his place in the line of succession.
