Never tasted victory: what countries most often took last place at Eurovision

Over the course of its 67-year history, the Eurovision Song Contest has won the title of the most prestigious event. The show's audience numbers hundreds of millions of viewers, and every year more and more people watch the broadcast. Throughout history, only one artist, the Irishman Johnny Logan, has won this competition twice. But there are also performers who have brought their country worse places several times.

OBOZREVATEL wants to tell you which states have most often taken the last place and which countries have never tasted triumph. In total, the list of those who have never won the Eurovision Song Contest includes 24 countries. Some of them have never gone beyond the semi-finals, and some have never reached the top 5.

San Marino and Slovakia have never been higher than 16th place. Georgia, Slovenia, and Macedonia are considered to be "average", having never reached the top 7. Lithuania, the Czech Republic and Belarus are in the top 5.

Throughout the history of the international contest, since 1956, Norway alone has been the last place winner at Eurovision 11 times. It was followed by Finland - 9 times; Germany, Austria and Belgium - 8 times; the United Kingdom and Switzerland - 5 times; and Portugal - 4 times.

Denmark, Cyprus, Iceland and France have only once come last in an international song contest.

The first Eurovision Song Contest was held in Switzerland in 1956. At that time, only 7 countries took part: Switzerland, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Italy, Germany and the Netherlands. The following year, these countries were joined by Denmark, Austria and the UK, after which dozens more countries announced their participation.
