In black and with "bloody" embroidery: Ukrainian film team in Venice organized a powerful action in support of the prisoners
During the Venice International Film Festival, which is currently taking place on the island of Lido, Italy, the Ukrainian team of the documentary Songs of a Land Burning Slowly held a powerful action. The purpose of the performance was to remind us of the Ukrainian civilians and soldiers who are in Russian captivity.
The participants of the action wore black clothes with red embroidery, which depicted the distance from the venue of the film festival to eight points on the map where Russians are holding Ukrainians. It was in Venice that the world premiere of Song of a Slowly Burning Land by Olga Zhurba recently took place. The movie is a diary of the Ukrainian state's plunge into the abyss of total war, filmed during the first two years of the full-scale invasion. This was reported by Suspilne.
The embroidery was designed by Alisa Lyubomska. The artist noted that she had put various meanings in the works and hopes that everyone will find something different in them - for some, the embroidery will look like a written letter, while for others the threads will remind them of blood. "Embroidery is also an art, so this format fits perfectly into the framework of the Biennale. I chose hand embroidery, which makes each letter unique, and the text looks as if it was written by hand," says Liubomska. "Besides, embroidery is our cultural code, and such elements are an additional opportunity to say who we are.
According to the director of the film, the team wanted to remind the world community about the terrible conditions of detention, fabricated charges, and torture that leads to death. "This is a great tragedy, which is actually known by few people abroad. And for which all those who are behind it and responsible must be punished and held accountable," says the filmmaker.
