"I have a great deal of guilt about that": bodyguard who tried to save JFK dies aged 93

Clint Hill, a Secret Service agent who rushed to defend President John F. Kennedy during the 1963 assassination, has died in the United States. He was 93 years old.

His publicist, who said that he passed away at his home in California on Friday, reported the news to BBC. The cause of death was not disclosed. His wife was right next to him during his passing.

On November 22, 1963, Hill was guarding First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy. When shots were fired in Dallas, USA, he immediately rushed to the limousine, trying to protect the couple. His actions were captured by Zapruder's famous recording, which became the main video evidence of the tragedy.

Even though Hill received a medal of honor for bravery and made a career in the Secret Service, the guilt never left him for the rest of his life. In an interview, he admitted, "If I had reacted about five-tenths of a second faster, maybe a second faster, I wouldn't be here today. I have a great deal of guilt about that. Had I turned in a different direction, I'd have made it. It's my fault."

Eventually, Hill realized that he could not have saved the president, but the trauma forced him to resign at the age of 43.

In 2009, he began collaborating with journalist Lisa McCubbin, with whom he wrote several memoirs, including the bestselling Mrs. Kennedy and Me. They married in 2021.
