"I did not want to do it at first": Tonia Matvienko performs "Kvitka dusha" for the first time since her mother's death. Video
For the first time since the death of her mother, Ukrainian music legend Nina Matvienko, Tonia Matvienko performed her mother's iconic song "Kvitka Dusha". As the 42-year-old singer admitted, she had not been able to sing even a word of the song before, and instead, tears just poured out. However, the situation changed at the PEACE. We Can Overcome War charity music event held in Vienna.
The event was organized by Miss Ukraine Universe 2023, singer Anhelina Usanova. She invited Antonina to perform the song together. The unexpected duet helped Matvienko finally return to singing her mother's special song. She told about her feelings in a commentary to the "ZhVL".
"I didn't even want to do it first. When my mom passed away, I had my first concert just two weeks later. It had been planned for a long time and I couldn't refuse it because people came and waited. I couldn't perform this song. They played the backing track and I just cried through the whole song. And now I have a huge connection with my mom through the song. I don't know how to explain it. It's like I'm meeting her at this moment. I have a different perspective on this situation," the singer said.
As you know, PEACE. We Can Overcome War is a charity music evening, the proceeds from which will be used to support children from the frontline regions of Ukraine who have suffered from Russian aggression. As Anhelina Usanova later reported, they managed to raise 253 thousand hryvnias. It probably was the charitable mission of the project that prompted Tonia Matvienko to finally take a step forward.
As for the duet with the model, singer, and event organizer Anhelina Usanova, the star assures, "We need to give her a chance to continue this so that everyone can sing. Anhelina is very bright. I like her very much. She looks like my eldest daughter. In fact, my daughter is standing next to me."
As a reminder, Nina Matvienko died two days before her 76th birthday, on October 8, 2023. The cause was cancer, as her son-in-law Arsen Mirzoian said.
On October 11, Kyiv said goodbye to the legend of the Ukrainian stage. Singer Natalia Mohilevska fulfilled her last request, Tonya Matvienko spoke about her mother's dying will, and Ukrainians gave the star a 10-minute round of applause.
