The Health turned to hygiene experts who explained how often you should change your towels to keep yourself safe from spreading infections. They also gave some related advice.

Dead cells, grease particles and some bodily secretions get on the fabric of the towel and become food for bacteria and fungi along with the moisture. That's why experts advise separating body, face and hand towels - to minimize the spread of microorganisms.

How often should you wash your towels?

There is no consensus on this, but briefly all options can be summed up by the word "often. Usually it is recommended to wash bath towels after 2-3 uses. Face and hand towels even more often.

Towels of those who have skin infections or have acute respiratory infections should be washed as often as possible. In some cases, after each use.

A sign that the towel is definitely time for washing is the appearance of a barely noticeable odor on it. It signals the beginning of microbial growth. It is also time to wash, if the textile has become rigid and no longer absorbs moisture normally. If the towel has ceased to perform its function properly even after washing, it should be thrown out and replaced with a new one.

How to properly dry towels

In fact, drying towels - between use and after washing - is just as important as cleaning itself. After all, it is on a damp towel that microorganisms multiply. Dry textiles are much safer in this regard.

Therefore, used damp towels should be dried outside the bathroom, where there is a constantly high level of humidity. Alternatively, you can hang them on the doors outside - on hooks or bars. If, however, the towel remains wet to the touch for a long time after showering, it should be replaced with a clean one and washed.
