Heiress of one of the world's stingiest billionaires files for divorce: Ivy Getty's lavish wedding to Tobias Engel stunned everyone in 2021. Photo
The great-granddaughter of one of the world's stingiest billionaires and oil tycoon Jean Paul Getty, artist Ivy Getty, has filed for divorce after a 4-year marriage to Tobias Engel. Although the couple got married in December 2020 privately, they still celebrated a lavish wedding a few months later, hitting the headlines many times.
The couple thought about the legal side of a possible divorce in advance, so after the engagement, a special agreement to protect all the assets of the billionaire family was drawn up. "It's obvious that Ivy, as a member of the Getty family, is cautious about legal tricks," an insider told Page Six.
The source indicates that Getty's lawyer filed for divorce back in January 2024. It is known that the couple did not undergo mediation (when a mediator can help resolve a conflict) as the relevant application is listed as "contested".
The artist has already deleted the photos of herself and Tobias Engel from her Instagram page, leaving those that were part of the wedding only.
The lavish celebration of the new marriage took place in several stages, the first of which was a pre-wedding party called "British Invasion". It was held at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco, California, USA. The artist changed three looks during the entire festive evening, and the theme of the event was the style of the 60s, Insider reports.
The wedding itself took place at San Francisco City Hall, where the ceremony was officiated by U.S. House of Representatives member Nancy Pelosi. A total of 450 guests were invited, including the Queen's Gambit star Anya Taylor-Joy, who herself secretly celebrated her wedding in 2022.
The billionaire heiress entrusted her look to designer John Galliano, who made an exquisite translucent dress from pieces of mirrors. The crown on her head and the long veil were similar. The ceremony was also attended by a guitarist as a sign of honor to Ivy Getty's late father.
John Gilbert Getty died in 2020 at the age of 52. The man was addicted to alcohol and later to drugs, which created considerable problems for his billionaire grandfather Jean Paul Getty. In order to get hold of some of the tycoon's money, John was even kidnapped and demanded a ransom of $17 million, but the wise, albeit stingy, oil tycoon was then able to reduce the price to as little as $3 million.
Ivy Getty and Tobias Engel met through a mutual friend, and began to communicate closely after a sudden meeting at Paris Fashion Week. The couple often went on vacation together, during one of which in Italy, the man proposed to his beloved at sunset.
