Grammy-nominated R&B singer Angie Stone killed in car accident at the age of 63

The American singer Angie Stone, known as a co-founder of the hip-hop trio The Sequence and author of cult R&B hits, died in a car accident. She was 63 years old.

Stone's representative confirmed to People that the tragedy occurred on March 1 - her car collided with an 18-wheeler truck. The singer's daughter, Ladi Diamond, confirmed her mother's death on social media, writing, "My mommy is gone."

Angie Stone, whose real name is Angela Laverne Brown, was born in South Carolina on December 18, 1961. Her career began in the late 1970s when she and her friends founded The Sequence, one of the first female hip-hop groups. Their hit Funk You Up (1979) became a classic of the genre.

In the 1990s, Stone moved to R&B, gaining popularity as a solo artist. Her album Black Diamond (1999) brought the hit No More Rain (In This Cloud), and her next album Mahogany Soul (2001) gave the world Wish I Didn't Miss You, one of the singer's most famous songs.

During her career, Stone has released 10 albums and has been nominated for three Grammy Awards. She has also worked as a songwriter for D'Angelo, Alicia Keys, and Lenny Kravitz, and has appeared in movies and reality shows. In 2023, she was inducted into the Women Songwriters Hall of Fame.

The singer is survived by two children and grandchildren.
