Stray Kids got into a xenophobic scandal with paparazzi at the Met Gala 2024
The famous South Korean music group Stray Kids faced xenophobia on the red carpet of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Met Gala 2024. Photographers shouted inappropriate statements at the stars, showing their indignation and disrespect for the guests.
Stray Kids is the first K-POP group to receive an invitation to the Fashion Oscars. Before them, Korean singers and members of the Blackpink band Rose and Jenny Kim, PSY, and other solo artists could be seen at the event.
The band's invitation was a landmark event for the fans, but the musicians' fans were unhappy with the paparazzi's behavior. The video, which contains offensive comments, quickly spread online.
Stray Kids received an invitation to attend the event directly from Tommy Hilfiger, so the artists were dressed in individual clothes created by the famous fashion house. The stars took part in an interview, talking about their fashion choices. As the band walked the famous red carpet, fans around the world were proud of their idols' revolutionary achievements.
However, amidst the merriment, a controversial note overshadowed the festivities. When footage of the event circulated online, fans saw a disturbing encounter with the paparazzi. In a fragment made by one of the media outlets, the photographers' mutterings echoed with dismissive comments, their voices laced with sarcasm: the media workers compared the musicians to "robots" devoid of emotion.
In another clip, the paparazzi can be heard issuing "directives" to the group. One voice can be heard ordering: "Everybody jumps," and another voice says: "How do you say that in Korean?". According to users, incidents like this reinforce stereotypes about K-POP and also demonstrate the false assumption that Korean stars do not speak English. Later, the band's leader Banchan spoke about the situation on his social media page: "We had a great time because everyone treated us with respect."
