Disney caught in high-profile sexist scandal: what 9 thousand women accuse the company of
Disney, the world's largest media conglomerate in the entertainment industry, was caught in a high-profile scandal. Nine thousand women have filed a class action lawsuit against the company. They complain that they are paid less than men in similar positions.
This lawsuit, which has already been granted by the court, is the largest of all related to the Equal Pay Act, which prohibits employees from receiving less pay for similar work based on their gender. Variety writes about it.
According to the source, the plaintiffs' lawyer, Lori Andrus, applauded the judge's decision outside the courtroom in downtown Los Angeles. She stated, "Disney has been deceiving these women for four years. They love their jobs. They love the brand. But they want to be respected and treated the way they should be in the workplace."
In response, Disney representatives expressed their disappointment in a written statement. The company's attorney, Felicia Davis, commented that "just because two employees work in the same family and at the same level does not mean that their work is substantially similar." She read off a long list of job titles - music producers, pastry chefs, nurses, architects, ride engineers, visual effects directors, dog handlers, Star Wars social media managers - to argue that the class members were too diverse to merit a satisfactory judgment.
"These are different segments, different business areas, in different locations. They report to different managers. They work in completely different industries, where they are paid very differently," Felicia commented.
Both sides brought in experts to prove or disprove the existence of a gender pay gap. Andrus said that the starting salary within the class is 2% lower for women than for men.
