An intriguing reason why Charles III chose an unusual location for his Christmas address has been revealed

King Charles III of Great Britain has already recorded his Christmas video message for the whole of England. This year, however, he chose the Fitzrovia Chapel in London instead of his classic location at the royal residence.

According to royal expert Robert Hartman in the Daily Mail, it was important for the king to find a place that is related to health care. Although the chapel is associated with religion rather than a hospital, there used to be a hospice next to the building, but it was demolished in the 90s.

"The choice of the Fitzrovia Chapel may certainly seem eccentric when viewed from the outside: a narrow Victorian building surrounded by artificial grass, with no obvious religious function other than stained glass windows. However, this hides a luxurious marble and mosaic interior inspired by Byzantine church architecture. It turned out that this place perfectly met the requirements of the king, who was looking for a place that would meet several criteria," says the royal expert.

He notes that it was important for Charles III to find a hospital to record the Christmas address because 2024 was a difficult year for the royal family in the field of health. It is known that the monarch and his daughter-in-law Kate Middleton are still battling cancer, and Queen Camilla suffered from a chest infection.

Fitzrovia Chapel was previously built for Middlesex Hospital, where seriously ill Englishmen were treated. According to Buckingham Palace, it was Charles III's grandfather, George VI, who "laid the foundation stone for the building in 1928."

"The King also wanted a venue with a strong community role, in line with what is expected to be one of the main themes of this year's broadcast. Although the monarch's words remain under wraps, it is widely expected that he will focus on the theme of community cohesion, not least in light of this summer's unrest across the country following the murder of three little girls in Southport. Fitzrovia has long been a place of civic, cultural, and religious activity," added Robert Harman.
