"A terrible war destroyed my home": 19-year-old Ukrainian Sofia Shamia presented a powerful video for Miss World 2023
The winner of Miss Ukraine 2023, 19-year-old Sofia Shamia, presented a charity video explaining the meaning of her victory in the Miss World talent contest. The woman spoke about the devastated Ukraine and her social work with the children who were traumatized. Mentioning information about the war is quite unusual as talent contests usually do not talk about politics.
In a video for Miss World 2023 on Instagram, Sofia spoke about her volunteer work and how her hobby helped children affected by the war. "My main mission is to nurture the light in children's hearts," she said.
Miss Ukraine once again reminded the public that a bloody war is still going on in Ukraine and spoke about the consequences it brings.
"On February 24, 2022, a terrible war destroyed my home, Ukraine, leaving the ruins of what was once a happy life. Thousands of people lost their homes due to missile attacks. Streets, villages and entire cities are in ruins, nature is devastated. The pain touched each of us. I was already involved in charity work, but the war made me realize that I could do more. I was inspired by Ukrainian volunteers," she summarized.
Sofia Shamia loves drawing, which gave her the impetus to create a business that helps children and their mothers: art therapy. To be able to work with these people on a regular basis, she even received an official status of a volunteer.
"As an artist, I realized the healing power of art. That's why I started art therapy with children: to understand their emotions. I organized a charity auction and used the proceeds from the sale of paintings for the rehabilitation of children who had their childhood taken away from them," she says in the video.
The money was donated to Frontline Medicks, an organization that provides assistance to all victims of war, including the military.
Children are the ones she works with. She actively organizes charity events for them and sees her mission in supporting them. Sofia believes that her victory in Miss Universe 2023 will unite the world.
"At Ohmtatdyt, I had an incredible opportunity to meet Maryna, who bravely survived the loss of her leg and now uses a prosthesis. I was incredibly happy to see a sparkle in her eyes. Noticing this, I realized what my main mission is: to ignite and nurture the light in children's hearts. This is what I am striving for," Miss Ukraine concluded.
As a reminder, Miss World 2023 will be held at the Gio World Conference Center in Mumbai, India, on March 9, 2024.
