Xi Jinping discusses peaceful settlement of the war in Ukraine with President of the European Council

On Tuesday, January 14, Chinese President Xi Jinping had a telephone conversation with European Council President Antonio Costa. During the call, the Chinese leader outlined China's position on its commitment to a peaceful, negotiated settlement of Russia's war against Ukraine.

This was reported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China. It noted that during the conversation, the two sides exchanged views on the situation in Ukraine.

"Xi Jinping explained in detail China's principled position of commitment to a peaceful settlement and promotion of negotiations," the statement said.

The Chinese president emphasized that China and Europe do not have fundamental conflicts of interest or geopolitical contradictions, and they are partners seeking mutual achievements.

Xi Jinping also assured Costa that China considers Europe an important pole in a multipolar world and supports European integration and the EU's strategic autonomy.

"The more serious and complex the international situation, the more China and Europe should stick to the original intention to establish diplomatic relations, strengthen strategic communication, increase strategic mutual trust and maintain a position of partnership," he said.

As reported by OBOZ.UA, last December, Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Russian Deputy Security Council Chairman Dmitry Medvedev and made several statements regarding Sino-Russian relations and the situation in the world. In particular, he called the relations between Russia and China "exemplary" but noted that their countries should "promote the development of the international order in a more just and reasonable direction."

Xi Jinping also reiterated Beijing's position on the war in Ukraine, saying that China has "repeatedly emphasized" the need to adhere to three principles. These are "non-expansion of battlefields, inadmissibility of escalation of hostilities, and inappropriateness of incitement."
