The Holy Fire descended in Jerusalem: how it all happened. Photo
On Saturday, May 4, on the eve of Easter, the Holy Fire descended from the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem. The miracle traditionally took place in the place where Jesus Christ was buried, under the supervision of delegations from all Christian churches.
As usual, on the eve of Holy Saturday, all the candles, lamps, and panicles were extinguished in the Church of the Resurrection. On Saturday morning, delegations of Christian churches visited the chapel on the Holy Sepulcher and then sealed it.
Representatives of seven Christian denominations (Orthodox, Armenian, Catholic, Greek Catholic, Coptic, and Protestant) were waiting for the Holy Fire to descend under the walls of the church. When it did, the patriarch lit and took out 33 candles, symbolizing the number of years of Jesus Christ's earthly life. Now the clergy will take the miracle from the Holy Land home.
The Holy Fire is God's mercy for people. Believers believe that this fire, brought from heaven, is a sign of new life and light that conquers darkness. After the Easter fire is lit, it is believed that this grace spreads among the faithful and will bring them blessings for the coming year. It is believed that if the fire does not go out, it will indicate the approach of the end of the world.
