Russia blocks Malta's Chairmanship in OSCE, urging for talks with Lavrov
After blocking Estonia's Chairmanship in OSCE in 2024, Russia prevented an alternative vote in which Malta was to be elected as the chairing state. At the same time, Russia also blocked the election of four top officials of the organization, including the secretary general.
This was reported by Radio Liberty's Brussels correspondent Rikard Jozwiak. According to him, the Russians are demanding that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov be present at the OSCE ministerial meeting in North Macedonia next week to make the final decision.
According to the journalist, Russia has once again resorted to blackmail, taking advantage of the fact that all decisions in the OSCE are made by consensus, and blocked the election of Malta as the organization's presiding state in 2024.
"Russia has already blocked Estonia's OSCE Chairmanship in 2024. Now it does not agree to an alternative vote for Malta's Chairmanship and four top positions in the organization (including the secretary general)," Jozwiak wrote.
Currently, the Russian delegation is demanding that the Russian foreign minister be received at the OSCE ministerial meeting that begins on November 30.
"They want Lavrov to be received in North Macedonia next week during the OSCE ministerial meeting to make a final decision," the journalist emphasized.
