Flooding in Europe

The Boris storm that swept through Central and Eastern Europe has caused heavy rains: catastrophically high floods have formed in the Upper Danube basin, which could break historical records. Dangerous flooding levels have been exceeded in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary.

The peak of the autumn Danube flood is expected in the first half of October. The situation was assessed by the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center.

They described the current hydrological situation on the Danube River.

"Significant, heavy, and extraordinary precipitation in the Upper Danube basin, especially in the sub-basins of its Austrian tributaries and the Morava River (Czech Republic, Slovakia), has led to the formation of a catastrophic high flood close to historical highs, exceeding dangerous flood levels in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary," the statement said.

Flooding is also forming on sections of the Danube in Germany and Austria.

"On the German and Austrian sections of the Danube, flood formation began on September 8-10 with a daily increase of 0.1-0.5 meters. The peak of the flood on the Upper Danube disappeared on September 15-18 with a height of 6-8 meters above pre-flood levels, reaching the highest level of danger (red) with flooding of large areas of settlements," the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center noted.

Experts also noted that on the Middle Danube (from Bratislava to Belgrade), the height of the flood wave as of September 20 is 5-7 meters.

Hungarian hydrologists predict that the maximums on the Danube section in central Hungary should form within the next 3 days, while in southern Hungary, Serbia, and the Romanian section of the Middle Danube, the rise will continue over the next week.

"In general, as of September 20, the flood wave stretched from the Hungarian city of Esztergom to the Serbian city of Belgrade. Due to the pre-flood release of reservoirs near the Iron Gate (Jerdap), the Lower Danube is also rising, by a total of 1.0-2.9 meters. The rise in water levels began on September 19, and in the Ukrainian section, it was by 0.1 m, with no negative consequences. The maximum of the autumn Danube flood is expected in the first half of October," the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center summarized.
