Poll shows whom Democrats will support if Biden withdraws
The majority of Democrats say that US Vice President Kamala Harris could replace President Joe Biden in the race if he decides not to run. At the same time, almost half believe that the current American leader should give way to her in the election race.
This is according to an Economist/YouGov poll, The Hill reports. According to the poll, 79% of Democrats would support Harris as the Democratic candidate in the November elections if Biden decides not to run.
Approximately 28% believe that Harris has a better chance of defeating Republican candidate Donald Trump than the incumbent, while 32% believe that her chances are the same.
The poll also found that 45% of Democrats believe that Biden should give up his seat in the race, while 41% believe that he should not.
Among those who think Biden should drop out, 68% cited concerns about his age, health, or cognitive function as the main reason. About 23% cited doubts about his ability to defeat Trump as the main reason.
Despite this, only 4% of Americans believe it is very likely that Biden will drop out of the election, and 15% believe it is fairly likely. About 65% consider it unlikely.
The survey was conducted from July 13 to 16 among 1582 respondents and has a margin of error of about 3.1%.
As reported, talks about Biden's possible withdrawal from the election continue after his debate with Trump, which caused panic among Democrats and which the president himself admitted was unsuccessful, explaining that it was difficult for him to discuss things "with a liar."
Biden recently announced his readiness to hold a new debate in September for Trumo to "come out and answer any questions." The US president also assured that he was "already riding it," answering a question to whether he was ready "to ride the horse again."
