NATO General: Russia is building up capabilities for war with the Baltic states

TheRussian Federation is trying to rebuild its military capabilities despite the war against Ukraine. This poses a threat to NATO, particularly to the Baltic states.

This opinion was voiced by German Lieutenant General Jürgen-Joachim von Sandrart, commander of the North-East Multinational Corps based in Szczecin, Poland. He spoke about military threats in an interview with LRT.lt.

He emphasized that the most likely enemy for the Baltic region is Russia.

"NATO acts as a defensive alliance and does not pose a threat to Russia, but NATO will respond if the threat from Russia leads to an offensive operation, a kind of invasion or violation of our integrity," the military warned.

He called the Suwalki corridor a key territory, which, from Moscow's point of view, is an obstacle on the way to connecting Kaliningrad with mainland Russia. The North Atlantic Alliance must ensure reliable protection of this territory.

The lieutenant general was asked to comment on the words of Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis that the aggressor country is mobilizing its resources against NATO. "Do you agree with this assessment?" the journalist asked.

"What he said is not a surprise, and it is common knowledge," Jürgen-Joachim von Sandrart replied. He emphasized that Moscow itself has announced that it will restore its military capabilities and capacities.

"Russia is currently largely committed to its illegal war against Ukraine, but it has already started and will continue to rebuild its capabilities separately from the war in Ukraine, and this poses an increased threat to the Baltic Sea region," the NATO military said.

He is confident that time will be of the essence. "That is why our defense preparations and readiness must be faster than Russia's recovery," the lieutenant general said.
