Local businessman arrested in Germany for supplying drone parts to Russia

In Germany, a German-Russian citizen, Waldemar V., illegally supplied electronic parts to a Russian company engaged in the production of military materials and components. A federal court in Germany has already issued a warrant for his arrest and imposed a custodial measure of restraint.

According to the website of the German Prosecutor General, the accused committed several commercial violations of the Foreign Trade and Payments Act. In particular, the investigation is aware of 26 deliveries in the period from January 2020 to March 2023 worth about EUR 715,000.

It is noted that the Russian company that received the parts is engaged in the production of Orlan-10 drones, which are currently used by the Russian armed forces in Ukraine. The components supplied to the defendant are a common part of drones of this type and fall under the scope of the Russia Embargo Regulation (EU) No. 833/2014.

To circumvent the EU sanctions, Waldemar W. typically imported the relevant goods from abroad into Germany and then exported them to Russia - in some cases through a company in Baden-Württemberg that he controlled.

The President's Office reported that an international working group on sanctions against Russia had examined 174 foreign components seized from three models of Russian UAVs. The vast majority of the components were imported, while important chips were manufactured in NATO countries and by Ukraine's allies.

In particular, the Russian army regularly uses three main models of drones: Shahed-136/131, Lancet and Orlan-10. At the same time, Russia still relies heavily on foreign-made components, including microelectronics, in the production of UAVs.
