Russia was testing Shahed drones in Ukraine for Iran to attack Israel - ISW

Iran's attack on Israel on the evening of April 13 was similar to the strikes that Russian troops have repeatedly carried out in Ukraine. Today, experts believe that the Russian attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure were a kind of test of Iranian-made Shahed kamikaze drones and ballistic missiles.

In particular, this was stated by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW). Analysts note that Russia's strikes on Ukraine were an attempt to determine the optimal package of means to break through Western air defense.

On the night of April 13-14, the aerospace forces of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched a large-scale strike against Israel with drones and missiles. The IDF said that all targets were intercepted by them and their allies outside Israeli airspace. At the same time, analysts emphasize the importance of the fact that Tehran struck Israel from Iranian territory, not exclusively with the help of the Yemeni Houthis and the Lebanese group Hezbollah, for the first time.

"Russia has been experimenting with a combination of ballistic and cruise missiles along with Iranian drones in Ukraine. Iran's current use of drones and missiles shows how it is learning from the Russians to develop increasingly dangerous and effective means of attacking Israel," the ISW emphasized.

They added that similarly, Tehran has used the Houthi attacks in the Red Sea to improve its drone tactics by testing the air defense capabilities of the US Navy.

According to military experts, the ongoing attacks on Israel provide Iran with an opportunity to evaluate the effectiveness of its various strike capabilities to understand how it can more effectively evade and suppress Western air and naval defenses.

"The United States, its allies and partners are dealing with an increasingly interconnected group of adversaries who help each other and learn from each other. The continued use of Iranian-designed drones by numerous US enemies and deepening ties between the players will help Tehran, Russia, North Korea and China improve the use of these systems against the United States and its allies," the ISW believes.

As reported, the Lebanese group Hezbollah also joined Iran's massive attack on Israel on the night of April 14. The militants launched missiles from multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS) in the north of the country from Lebanon.

As reported, at least one hundred Iranian drones fired at Israel were intercepted outside Israeli airspace by the US and British forces. Tehran has previously threatened a harsh response to any country that opens its airspace or territory "for attacks from Israel."
