Iran continues to increase its stockpile of enriched uranium: the IAEA sounds the alarm
Iran has increased its enriched uranium reserves again this quarter - by 20.6 kg compared to February 2024. We are talking about uranium enriched to almost weapons-grade levels - up to 60%.
According to the Associated Press, this is stated in a confidential report by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). So now Tehran's stockpile of uranium enriched to 60% has reached 142.1 kg.
In addition, according to the IAEA, the total stockpile of all types of enriched uranium increased by 675.8 kg over the quarter and amounted to 6201.3 kg in May.
It should be noted that the production of nuclear weapons requires uranium enrichment of up to 90%.
The agency emphasized that uranium enriched to 60% is a "short technical step" from the 90% weapons-grade level. About 42 kg of uranium enriched to 60% can theoretically be used to make one nuclear bomb if it is further enriched to 90%.
In December 2023, the IAEA said that Iran had again increased its production of enriched uranium and had enough enriched uranium to create three nuclear bombs, bringing the enrichment level to 90%.
Tehran denies suspicions of intentions to build an atomic bomb.
As a reminder, in the nuclear deal concluded in 2015, Iran committed itself not to exceed the level of uranium enrichment by 4%. However, after the U.S. withdrew from the deal under Donald Trump's presidency, Tehran announced a gradual abandonment of its obligations under the agreement.
As reported by OBOZ.UA, the United States believes that Iran has enough resources to create a nuclear device. If Tehran decides that it needs nuclear weapons, the state may need no more than two weeks to create them.
