In South Africa, white farmers accused of feeding pigs with murdered black women: what's going on

Protests are taking place in Limpopo, South Africa because a court in Polokwane has decided to grant bail to farmers suspected of the premeditated murder of two women. This murder has caused a new racial scandal in South Africa: a white farmer and two of his workers not only shot two black women but also fed their bodies to pigs.

According to the BBC, 45-year-old Maria Makgato and 34-year-old Lucia Ndlovu were looking for food on a farm near Polokwane when they were shot. This farm was known for often feeding beggars, the New York Times adds.

The Polokwane court ruled that the farm owner,  Zachariah Johannes Olivier, 60, and his employees Adrian de Wet, 19, and William Musora, 50, could be released on bail. Although the judges have not yet made a final decision on whether to release the suspects on bail, the court hearing itself has sparked protests. People are demanding that the suspects be denied release.

Judge Ntilane Felleng has postponed a decision on whether the suspects should be granted bail until November 6.

In addition to being charged with premeditated murder, the three men are also facing attempted murder charges in the Polokwane court. At the time of the shooting, Mabutho Ncube, Lucia Ndlovu's husband, was with the women. He was wounded but managed to escape and call a doctor for help.

It was Mabutho Ncube who reported the shooting to the police. When the police arrived at the farm, they found the decomposed and partially eaten bodies of the women in the pigsty.

Unfortunately, the case in Polokwane is not the only one in South Africa. There are many white farmers and black beggars. Recently, in the Mpumalanga province, a farmer and his security guard were arrested on charges of murdering two black men whom the killers accused of stealing sheep. The farmers burned the bodies of the victims.

And in Lutzville, a 70-year-old white farmer deliberately ran over a six-year-old black boy with his car who picked up an orange from the ground on his farm.
