In Italy, a former officer of the Italian Navy was found guilty of spying for the aggressor country Russia. On Friday, January 19, the court sentenced him to 20 years in prison.

This was reported by ANSA. A jury in Rome found frigate captain Walter Biot guilty of espionage and bribery.

Earlier, in March 2021, a former Italian Navy officer was caught handing over classified documents to Russian embassy officials in a shopping center in Rome. He was supposed to receive 5 thousand euros for handing over the data to the Russians, local media reported.

Prosecutors had asked for 18 years in prison for the spy but the sentence was eventually increased to 20 years in prison.

This is the second sentence Biot has received. In the spring of 2023, a military tribunal in Rome sentenced him to 30 years in prison. An appeal was filed against this decision.

It is noted that in 2021, Italy expelled two employees of the Russian embassy in connection with this case.
