The closure of the embassy is not a severance of diplomatic relations

Iceland was the first European country to close its embassy in Moscow. At the same time, the country's authorities have decided to increase their presence in Ukraine.

This was reported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iceland. "As of today, the activities of the Icelandic Embassy in Moscow have been suspended. The decision is not a break in diplomatic relations with Russia," the statement said.

The Icelandic Embassy in Moscow was also responsible for working with citizens of Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. The embassy was located in the centre of Moscow.

At the same time, the Icelandic authorities noted that the closure of the embassy was not a break in diplomatic relations.

At the same time, the Icelandic Foreign Ministry announced plans to expand its presence in Ukraine. It is noted that the ministry has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which will provide Icelandic diplomats and representatives with access to the capabilities of the Baltic country's embassy in Kyiv.

"Iceland plans to increase its presence in solidarity with Ukraine in the face of Russia's illegal aggression," the country's Foreign Ministry said.

Icelandic Foreign Minister Thordis Kolbrun Reykfjord Gylfadottir, along with other Scandinavian colleagues, called for "maximising transatlantic efforts to accelerate Ukraine's victory".

As OBOZREVATEL previously reported, on 23 March, the Icelandic Parliament recognised the artificially organised Holodomor of 1932-33 as genocide, which resulted in the deaths of millions of Ukrainians from starvation. The Althingi deputies also clearly identified the perpetrators of this terrible crime: "the totalitarian government in Moscow".
