Germany arrested entrepreneur who supplied drone components to Russia: what is known

An entrepreneur who supplied military goods to Russia was arrested in Germany. In particular, we are talking about components for drones.

This was reported by the German newspaper Tagesschau. It is noted that the entrepreneur supplied components for Russian military drones and other goods to Russia, which is contrary to current sanctions.

According to the Frankfurt Public Prosecutor's Office and the Main Customs Office, an arrest warrant was executed on Wednesday for a 47-year-old resident of the Kassel district. The investigation also included searches of the man's office and residential premises with Russian citizenship. But the authorities did not specify where exactly.

In particular, the 47-year-old man is suspected of violating the law on foreign trade. In 2022 and 2023, he reportedly exported "various electronic components", aircraft engine models, and other goods to Russia for a total of about two million euros through "additional bypass deliveries".

According to the investigation, the engines were installed, in particular, on the Russian Orlan-10 drone. This type of drone is used by the Russian occupiers in the war against Ukraine, for example, to direct artillery fire.

In addition, this person exported two "expensive cars" to Russia, which is also illegal under current sanctions rules.

According to the investigation, the entrepreneur first delivered the goods to an intermediate recipient in Hong Kong, through whom the components were delivered to St. Petersburg, Russia, a company owned by the suspect's partner.

It is noted that some of these supplies were successfully stopped in the summer of 2023: 120 engines were seized, which prevented exports to Russia.

As a reminder, Russia receives foreign components necessary for the production of anti-aircraft systems and Kalibr missiles used in the war against Ukraine. The supplier company is connected to the family of the Vice Speaker of the Federation Council, managing to avoid sanctions.
