The Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) has released a classified memorandum that sheds light on the assassinations of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin's political opponents. It also refers to an attempted assassination of former Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko, who was poisoned with dioxin in the fall of 2004.

Bloomberg writes about it. US intelligence included Yushchenko's poisoning in the list of possible orders from the Kremlin.

"A key example is former Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko, who was nearly fatally poisoned in 2004. His supporters concluded that Russian intelligence had added the chemical dioxin to his food when he was a presidential candidate and advocated Ukraine's integration with the West," the document says.

It should be noted that the US National Intelligence Service does not directly state that Russia was behind the poisoning of Viktor Yushchenko. American intelligence officials cite the words of the former Ukrainian president's associates who spoke about the assassination attempt.

The report emphasizes that the Kremlin targets political and opposition leaders in "former Soviet republics that are deemed a threat."

According to the US intelligence, Russia has the ability to kill people with chemical and biological agents, using long-term efforts dating back to Soviet times.

As reported earlier, the said document also stated that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin began killing his political opponents during his first presidential term.

The report mentions only those murders that were authorized by Putin himself. Among them are the murders of the head of the self-proclaimed Ichkeria, Zelimkhan Yandarbiyev, former FSB officer Alexander Litvinenko, and Russian businessman Alexander Perepelichny.
