CIA puts forward a proposal to end the war in Gaza: WSJ publishes details
The US Central Intelligence Agency has put forward a new proposal to end the war between Israel and Hamas. It provides for the release of 40 out of more than 100 prisoners, including 5 female soldiers still held in Gaza, in exchange for the release of 900 Palestinian prisoners from Israeli prisons.
In particular, 100 of them were accused of terrorism. The proposal was voiced by CIA Director William Burns, according to The Wall Street Journal.
He also proposed that civilian Palestinians return to the northern part of Gaza from the south, where they have been forced to move since the beginning of the conflict in October, without restrictions. Israel fears this because of the likelihood that Hamas militants will return to the "cleared" areas and mix with Palestinians.
The American plan also stipulates that Palestinians who are allowed to return will have freedom of movement on two main roads from north to south, and Israeli troops will be almost a third of a mile from these roads.
On April 7, the Israeli Defense Forces withdrew its main units from the southern part of the Gaza Strip, leaving some forces in the north and center of the enclave. Senior military officials assured that the decision was made without any external pressure, but Israeli media noted that this event coincided with harsh criticism of Israel over the accidental killing of humanitarian mission workers.
Earlier, the White House reported that the withdrawal of the Israel Defense Forces from the southern part of the Gaza Strip may be due to the re-equipment of personnel. They noted that the IDF troops need to rest.
Earlier, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the Israeli Defense Forces will fight until the group is completely defeated and is ready to cease fire only after the hostages are returned.
