Charles Michel will go for talks with Orban after his promises to block aid to Ukraine
On Monday, November 27, President of the European Council Charles Michel will undertake an official visit to Hungary. In Budapest, he will engage in a bilateral meeting with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
This information was provided by Catherine Kasinje, the spokesperson for the President of the European Council. The visit occurred amidst the Hungarian Prime Minister's obstruction of EU assistance to Ukraine.
"On Monday, President of the European Council Charles Michel will journey to Hungary for a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Viktor Orban in anticipation of the European Council meeting," stated the release.
This visit follows information about a letter sent by Orban to Michel. In the letter, the Hungarian Prime Minister issued a threat to block all EU assistance to Ukraine and impede the country's accession to the European Union unless the leaders of the association reconsider their strategy in supporting Kyiv.
According to Orban, no decisions regarding the financing of Ukraine, the commencement of negotiations for its EU accession, or the imposition of further sanctions against Russia should be made until this "strategic discussion" among EU leaders takes place at their meeting in Brussels in mid-December.
In his letter, Orban questioned why Europe should continue supporting Ukraine, especially when the United States, the primary provider of military aid to Kyiv, might face challenges in sustaining funding due to uncertainties over future support.
Orban hinted that Budapest might exercise its veto power to obstruct the disbursement of the planned €50 billion in aid to Ukraine, crucial funds required for the Ukrainian government as its Armed Forces resist the Russian invaders.
In addition to the €50 billion, Orban is threatening to block the planned €500 million in military aid to Ukraine.
Previously, Orban stated his intention to prevent the commencement of negotiations on Ukraine's EU accession, dismissing Brussels' commitment to initiate them as a mistake.
