Brazilian president will not attend peace summit on Ukraine: what is the reason

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has decided not to participate in the Global Peace Summit on Ukraine, which will be held in Switzerland in June. This is due to the fact that the countries of the so-called Global South have reservations about the sanctions imposed by the West against Russia over its war in Ukraine.

This was reported by CNN Brasil, citing sources in Brazilian diplomatic circles. It is noted that the Swiss government specifically invited Lula da Silva during a personal meeting between Swiss Chancellor Ignazio Cassis and Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira on April 30.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy also invited the Brazilian leader to attend the summit.

However, according to Lula and representatives of the Brazilian Foreign Ministry, participation in the summit is inappropriate as the event "does not engage both sides in resolving the conflict."

Brazilian diplomatic sources report that Lula da Silva and Mauro Vieira met this week and decided that the president would not lead the country's delegation to the summit. Who will fulfill this role has not yet been determined.

Earlier, Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said that Ukraine does not invite Russia to the Global Peace Summit as it does not plan to sit down with it at the negotiating table. According to him, there is no point in talking to an aggressor that does not share the views of Ukrainians on peace.

At the same time, Kuleba did not rule out the possibility of negotiations with Russia after the first peace summit.

Earlier, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Russia was trying to disrupt the Peace Summit. According to him, the aggressor has a specific plan aimed at reducing the number of participating countries and postponing the event.
