U.S. and Israel discuss possible interim government in Gaza Strip

Representatives of the Israeli and American authorities are discussing the possibility of establishing an interim government in the Gaza Strip. Such a body could be created with the support of the United Nations.

At the same time, this initiative will require support from the Arab countries of the region. This was reported by Bloomberg.

The likelihood of establishing an interim government in the Gaza Strip depends on further developments, in particular on the success of the Israeli ground operation in Palestine. Israeli officials have repeatedly stated that they do not intend to occupy the Gaza Strip, but they have also stated that the continuation of Hamas rule is unacceptable after the October 7 terrorist attack.

The United States is concerned about what might happen in Gaza after the overthrow of the Hamas terrorist group. U.S. officials believe that Israel has not sufficiently thought through the scenario after the completion of the ground operation against terrorists. The United States also believes that the attack in Gaza, in addition to the expulsion of Hamas, could escalate into a larger regional conflict.

In the two weeks following the Hamas attack, US President Joe Biden's team tried to balance support for Israel with concerns about the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip. According to preliminary reports, the United States and its allies sought to slow down the timing of the IDF ground operation to buy time for more people to leave the Gaza Strip.

In addition, U.S. officials tried to secure secret negotiations mediated by Qatar to free hostages held by Hamas.

According to William Asher, a former senior Middle East analyst at the Central Intelligence Agency, it will be incredibly difficult to create an interim government in the Gaza Strip, and it will be even more difficult to get Arab governments to agree.

At the same time, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said that his country does not intend to govern the territory of Gaza after the end of military operations. He added that Israel seeks to separate itself from Gaza and create a "new security reality" in the region.

According to the US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip deserve a leadership that will allow them to live in peace and security. At the same time, he did not go into details about the future government in the Gaza Strip.

"I cannot say today what exactly it will look like in the future. But this is the right question to ask now as it is happening live. We have to think in the long term," the Biden adviser said.

As a reminder, the United States and several European governments are pushing Israel to refrain from a ground operation in the Gaza Strip. The international community made demands after the release of two hostages in Gaza.

Earlier it was reported that the Office of the Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu categorically denies negotiations on the possibility of returning control of the Gaza Strip to Palestine.

As reported by OBOZ.UA, according to updated data, 24 Ukrainians were killed in Israel as a result of an attack by Hamas militants, and three more went missing. The number of foreign victims of the attack is the biggest among Ukrainians and Americans.
