"Any call for nuclear warfare is an irresponsibility": Borrel reacts to Putin's approval of updated Russian doctrine

Russian dictator Putin's approval of the new Russian nuclear doctrine has once again proved the Kremlin's irresponsible attitude to its international obligations. It is symbolic that the announcement of the updates coincided with the 1000th day of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

This was stated by the European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, at a press conference following the EU Foreign Affairs Council on November 19. His words were quoted by the Ukrinform news agency.

The EU's top diplomat reminded that this is not the first time Moscow has threatened nuclear escalation, which is completely irresponsible.

"Russia has subscribed to the principle that 'a nuclear war cannot be won and, so, must never be fought'. Any call for nuclear warfare is an irresponsibility. We have to call it the way it is," Borrell said.

According to him, this is not the first time Putin has relied on nuclear weapons. In addition, the dictator is creating food and energy crises and increasing the danger by using North Korean troops on European soil.

"But to call for nuclear [weapons], [to] talk about nuclear deterrence is something that we strongly reject. We condemn any reference to the use of nuclear arms, and it is certainly being done on purpose on this specific date. Of course, this was done intentionally for this special date (1000 days of full-scale Russian aggression - Ed.)," the chief European diplomat added.

As a reminder, Russian dictator Putin has approved a new nuclear doctrine of the Russian Federation. The Russian war criminal signed the relevant decree on the 1000th day of the full-scale war against Ukraine. The updated document provides for the expansion of the grounds for the use of nuclear weapons.

Earlier, the Kremlin admitted that it had decided to change its nuclear doctrine in order to threaten Western countries. According to Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov, Russia warns the West of the consequences in case of an attack.

As reported, the White House said that it does not intend to change its nuclear policy in response to Russia's new doctrine, which expands the conditions for the use of nuclear weapons.
