"Already done a lot of damage": the German Foreign Ministry complained about Hungary's presidency of the EU Council
Hungary began its six-month rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union on July 1. And in less than two weeks, its presidency has already done a lot of damage.
This was stated by the German Foreign Ministry. This was reported by Reuters.
Hungarian far-right Prime Minister Viktor Orban has stirred up a scandal in recent days. At his discretion, he organized a "peacekeeping tour" in which, after a trip to Kyiv, he visited Russia and China, discussing with the Russian dictator and the Chinese president immediate peace talks to end the war.
Yesterday, July 11, Orban also met with Donald Trump in Florida.
"We have to see how Hungary's presidency of the Council will continue," said a German ministry spokesman when asked how Berlin plans to respond to Orban's recent diplomatic visits.
"We are now on the 12th day of Hungary's presidency, and it has already done a lot of damage," the spokesman emphasized.
As a reminder, the meeting between Orban and Trump, where, according to the Hungarian prime minister, they discussed ways to achieve peace in Ukraine, took place at the Mar-a-Lago residence located on a barrier island in Palm Beach, Florida. After the meeting, Orban shared "good news" on social media: that Trump was going to end Russia's war in Ukraine. However, he did not specify how exactly he intends to do this.
Trump also spoke about the meeting with Orban.
"Thank you, Viktor. There must be PEACE, and quickly. Too many people have died in a war that should never have started!" Trump wrote on social media.
As reported by OBOZ.UA:
The EU said that Orban's trip to Putin contradicts internal EU treaties. Orban is being prepared to be punished.
Because of Orban's trip to Putin, six EU countries will boycott any ministerial meetings in the EU Council throughout July. This period, as well as the number of countries that decide to ignore EU government meetings, may increase.
