The House of Representatives went on vacation
The U.S. House of Representatives adjourned without considering a bill to help Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan. American lawmakers will return to work on February 28.
This was reported by the Voice of America on Friday, February 16. However, congressmen will not be able to consider this document even after they return. Then the main issue will again be to avoid a shutdown in the United States.
US President Joe Biden reacted to the decision. "The inability to support Ukraine at this critical moment will never be forgotten," the head of state wrote on the social network X.
As you know, on February 13, the U.S. Senate supported a bill that would allocate a total of $95.3 billion to help Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan. Of this, $60 billion should go to Ukraine. However, the Senate's decision is not enough to allocate the money – the bill must pass the House of Representatives.
To recap, the $60 billion for Ukraine includes:
– $19.85 billion for U.S. weapons and equipment provided to Ukraine from the Pentagon's stockpile;
– $13.8 billion for the purchase of weapons and ammunition from the US defense industrial base;
– $14.8 billion for continued training of the Ukrainian military, intelligence sharing, and other support measures;
– $7.85 billion for direct budget support to Ukraine;
– $1.58 billion to support the development of the Ukrainian economy in priority sectors.
The previous bill provided for $106 billion for Ukraine, Israel, Taiwan, and the protection of the US border, but Republicans blocked its consideration, demanding tighter control over the US border with Mexico.
As reported by OBOZ.UA, the leader of the Servant of the People faction in the Verkhovna Rada, David Arakhamia, said that Ukraine would have enough resources for another two months and expressed confidence that during this time the US Congress would finally approve aid for Ukraine.
